In high school I wrote lyrics on the girls I had a crush on, fancied myself as a Shakespearean, did a Beatlesque backdrop for the school dance (an artist like Lennon!), & was a tearoom DJ playing to school kids on Saturday mornings in my old man's cafe!

At 16 I got a break playing Fender bass in a pop group called the SANPipers, my Pa bought the bass from the Celtic poet Ramsay Mackay of the Beathovens who taught me walking bass & I got him the bass job in my cousin's then famous group, Freedoms Children. I played bass in Jack Groenewald's swing quartet with a great drummer, George Demmer. Chasing the British thing I froze in London in '67 & couldn't afford the clothes in Carnaby street, took a few Flamenco lessons in Madrid & hung out with the Flamenco guitarists Neville Hofbrand & Constantino El Greco. Took a few Classical lessons in Athens & spaced out with 2 great American musicians, Rick Lynch & Herman Rux in Ibiza '69/'70, met Taj Mahal there on a yacht, & I think Joplin. Busked in Paris, playing rhythm guitar with Gerard the French violin player, roundabout Morrison's time there. We did Montmartre, the Metro, parks etc. & I did a casual job choosing records for the French Radiodiffussion Africa broadcast.
