JESSE BOREGO

 

 
          Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, where he received his early theatrical experience in the schools and recreation centers of his hometown, he continued his education studying Theatre and Dance at University of Incarnate Word, And Acting at California Institute of the Arts.  Attending an open audition for the then popular television series FAME, he landed the principal role of Jesse Velasquez, a role which lasted for three years.  From there he returned to the theater, working for five years with avant-garde director Joanne Akalaital, from the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, to the Joe Papp Public Theater in New York, playing such roles as Price Leon in LEON AND LENA, Giovanni in TIS PITY SHE’S A WHORE, Woyzek in Buchner’s WOYZECK.

          His film debut came in 1988 opposite Nick Nolte and Rosanna Arquette, in the martin Scorcese segment Life Lessons in the Film NEW YORK STORIES.  From there he continued working in film, collaborating with Academy Award winning director Taylor Hackford in the lead role of Cruz in the film BOUND BY HONOR/ BLOOD IN - BLOOD OUT, opposite Law and Order’s Benjamin Bratt.  This would prove to be a fruitful collaboration for he would go on to star with Ben Bratt and Alfred Woodard in one of Bratt’s own productions, FOLLOW ME HOME, written and directed by Peter Bratt, which premiered at the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL in 1995.

          He continued working in film, working with such directors as Allison Anders’ MI VIDA LOCA, Darnell Marin I LIKE IT LIKE THATE, Tim hunter THE MAKER, even working with Internationally recognized director Gabriel Retes on the film WELCOME/ BIENVENIDOS which won five Arieles in Mexico (the equivalent of the Oscar), and placed at the Havana Film festival.

In 1990 he began Lupita Productions, producing music concerts and theatrical productions.  In 1993 he produced a 16mm short EL SUENO DE SIMON written and directed by his brother James Borrego. In 1995 he produced and directed FLATTIME, also a 16mm short film, written by Chicano writer Jimmy Santiago Baca.

          In 1996 he starred as the historical figure TECUMSEH for TNT’s Native American Series, produced by Francis Ford Coppola.  That same year he also co-starred opposite Jim Belushi in RETROACTIVE, and Matthew Modine in THE MAKER, both premiering on HBO the following year.  In 1997 he played Cindino opposite John Malkovich and Nicholas Cage in CON AIR.

          His television credits include guest star roles on CHICAGO HOPE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, BRIMSTONE, MARRIED WITH CHILDREN, and the special E. R. LIVE episode.
